We have had a fun morning in Shanghai and it's not even 8am yet! This morning, we had the special treat of clear weather to view the Annular Eclipse! We didn't get to see the really cool Ring of Fire, as we are not along the central path. Taiwan, not too far south of us, was able to see the ring of fire around the moon, we saw a nice partial eclipse. The last annular eclipse I remember was when I was in high school, which seems to be getting further away exponentially. Here's a picture of the action (at least, what I was able to photograph):
The photo was taken late in the eclipse, so only a small portion of the sun was still covered. You'll have to click on the picture to make it big enough to see. We were surprised (and excited) to find that our bathroom was the perfect viewing spot! Here's a picture of my super-scientific eclipse-viewing card:
It's funny, there hasn't really been any local news (not that I get a whole lot of that) about the eclipse here. Even if I do an internet search on Shanghai Eclipse, I get results for prior lunar eclipses and jewelry. It's not even on the front page of The Shanghai Daily's website. M asked Mr. Mao about it yesterday and he said a dog is eating the sun. Not sure about that, but thought it was good to pass on :). Finally, something that is intriguing to me is that the news reports from the U.S. say that the eclipse will happen on May 20th for North America and May 21st for Asia. The intriguing part about that is the order - Asia saw the eclipse before North America! Craziness!
